Mara was founded in 1960 by Camillo Marchina in the province of Brescia, one of northern Italy's great metalworking regions. More than six decades on it remains a family business, led by the second and third generations: Luciano Marchina as chief executive and his daughter Laura Marchina as managing director. From its home in Passirano, in the Franciacorta area, the company makes furniture systems and pieces for offices, contract interiors and the home, and exports to more than 70 countries.

Metal is the thread that runs through Mara's story. The company built its reputation on tables and desks, where it is known for developing mechanisms, movements and clever technical solutions, many of them patented. Every stage of production still happens in its own Brescia facilities, from laser cutting to welding, bending and painting. That control lets Mara engineer pieces that hold up to the demands of public tenders, with close attention to safety, strength and fire performance.

In recent years the company has opened its doors wider to design. Brescia architect Marcello Ziliani, a former student of Achille Castiglioni, created the Icon seating collection, selected for the ADI Design Index 2022. In 2024 Mara made its debut at Salone del Mobile.Milano with four new author collections by AMDL CIRCLE, Christophe Pillet, Ferruccio Laviani and Marcello Ziliani, shown in a setting designed by Laviani that explored how living and working spaces now overlap. Recognition has followed, including German Design Awards in 2025 for Typo, Foil and Icon High-Back, and a place in the ADI Design Index 2025 for Laviani's Elle bookcase.

What makes Mara distinctive is a kind of quiet intelligence. Its designers talk about technology that is present but carefully hidden, so the mechanics disappear and the piece simply works. The company pairs that with a serious commitment to sustainability: most of the energy used in production comes from its own solar panels, the steel is sourced from local mills and contains recycled content, and the new painting plant was designed to cut powder waste. The result is furniture with an honest, architectural calm, made in Italy by people who know metal intimately.
