Zilio A&C has been making chairs in the north east corner of Italy since 1951. The company belongs to the Manzano chair district in Friuli, the cluster of towns near Udine long known as the Triangolo della Sedia, or chair triangle, where furniture making has been the local trade for generations. It is still family owned and now in its third generation under Carlo Zilio, and works from Via dell'Artigianato in San Giovanni al Natisone. The registered name in the site footer is Zilio A&C srl Unipersonale, and older trade listings such as Salone del Mobile and Architonic still file the company under its full name, Zilio Aldo & C.

The material palette is deliberately short. Oak, ash and beech do most of the work, joined by powder coated steel where a frame needs to be lean, and by leather, hemp and wool on the upholstered pieces. Zilio describes an approach where know-how is passed from father to son and where traditional joinery sits beside modern machining, with hand finishing used when a project asks for it. Production is entirely Italian and the company states that the wood species it uses are FSC certified. Its own finish document is unusually plain about what customers actually get: three timbers in a named set of stains and lacquers, and a fabric range from Kvadrat, Gabriel, Crevin and Rohi with Martindale rub counts listed for every one, several of them CRIB5 certificated for contract use. That combination of a narrow catalogue and full disclosure is a good sign for anyone specifying to a brief.

The design side is deliberately international. Zilio works with a standing group of outside designers rather than an in-house studio: the London based Japanese duo Mentsen, who also act as the brand's art director, Note Design Studio of Stockholm, Milanese designer Alessandro Stabile, Swiss designer Simon Kampfer, Tomoko Azumi, Sylvain Willenz, David Dolcini, Peter Otto Vosding, Roger Arquer, Takashi Kirimoto, Ronald Jeanson, Dossofiorito, and Chung-yen Chang with Tian Jin. The results have collected a run of Archiproducts Design Awards, for the Arkad pouf system in 2019, the Candid chair in 2020, the Bacchette folding chair in 2022 and the Ax stool in 2024. The collection now runs to about 69 pieces across chairs, armchairs and lounge, stools and benches, tables and accessories.

For a commercial dealer the useful part of the story is where the furniture ends up. Zilio pieces are in the Royal Court Theatre in London, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Helsinki City Hall, the Morimoto restaurant in Dubai, the Best Western Plus Grow Hotel in Stockholm, Gail's on the King's Road, the God Save the Food chain in Milan, the Festival Theatre cafe in Edinburgh, and Fonda in Hawthorn, Melbourne. These are places where chairs are moved, stacked and cleaned every day. The pieces themselves stay quiet about it: a wooden curve, a metal joint, a line of stitching, nothing that announces itself from across the room.
