A third-generation family upholsterer from Värnamo, Sweden, making characterful, long-lasting furniture for hotels, offices and public spaces, built almost entirely in its own local factory.
Jonas Ihreborn is a family furniture maker in Värnamo, in the Småland region of southern Sweden, a district the company calls the heart of Sweden's manufacturing region. The business carries its founder's name, and Jonas Ihreborn is the third generation in a line of upholstery craftsmen and producers. He was born into the furniture industry, and his working knowledge runs from design through production and logistics. Swedish company records show Jonas Ihreborn AB was registered in 1991, and the firm still describes itself first as a family business, where values and personal engagement matter most.
The company's thinking is disarmingly simple. It believes furniture can only be justified if it has personality and truly fulfils a need. That idea shapes a collection of sofas, modular seating, easy chairs, tables and accessories made for public spaces: hotel lobbies, offices, restaurants and meeting rooms, where pieces have to work hard every day and still look composed years later. Sustainability sits alongside it, expressed less as a slogan than as a habit of choosing durable materials and designing for the whole life of a piece.
Jonas Ihreborn is also a designer in his own right. In 2007 he drew the Seventy easy chair, a slim, generous armchair that went on to anchor a family of pieces. A numbered edition of 100 marked its tenth anniversary, with a rusted frame and vegetable-tanned leather meant to reflect the nature of Småland, and in 2021 Seventy Five Wood followed with a solid timber frame and leather tanned using olive tree leaves. His Cap chair of 2022 reworks the classic club chair into something compact and bold with a surprisingly soft surface.
What sets the company apart is its scale and closeness to the work. Almost all production happens locally in Värnamo, close to trusted sub-suppliers, with an in-house prototyping workshop that lets a small team develop ideas quickly. In the company's own words, it is small enough to be flexible and big enough to handle large projects for customers around the world. Värnamo's municipality notes that the business has kept the friendly spirit of a small family firm while taking on large, fast production runs, which it describes as something quite unique in Sweden today. For Australian architects and designers, that means Scandinavian pieces with real character, made by people who know every step of how they come together.

(02) How it’s made
Made locally in Värnamo
Jonas Ihreborn's furniture is made in the company's own factory in Värnamo, in Småland, close to the trusted local sub-suppliers it works with. According to Värnamo municipality, 99 per cent of production takes place locally. Keeping the work nearby gives the company control over the whole production process, from quality to fair working conditions, and an in-house prototyping workshop lets new designs move quickly from idea to finished piece.
The company says it considers the entire life cycle of each piece, choosing durable, sustainable materials so the furniture lasts. Examples include vegetable-tanned leather on the Seventy anniversary edition, organic leather tanned with olive tree leaves on Seventy Five Wood, and solid Swedish oak on the Play-Wood tables.
In their words
“The body is soft and the architecture is hard, Tundra is a combination of these two”
— Thomas E. Alken, designer

(03) Design
Designers with a light touch
Jonas Ihreborn designs pieces himself, including the Seventy family and the Cap chair, and works with a small circle of Scandinavian designers. Helene Tiedemann, who studied at Central Saint Martins in London, is the most prolific: her Blob, Talk, Story, Flora, Play and Bumble Bee collections show her calm, welcoming take on Scandinavian simplicity, often with a playful sense of movement.
Danish designer Thomas E. Alken draws on nature and the human body, as in his Tundra and Tip Toe collections. Håkan Olsson and Kristofer Jonsson of White Arkitekter designed the Cosmo range, and Konstfack-trained Matz Borgström created Pod, Piano and Pipe. The collection also includes Arabesk, a lounge chair by the late Swedish designer and artist Folke Jansson.
