Humanscale was founded in New York in 1983 by Robert (Bob) King, who set out to rethink how people interact with their workstations. The goal was clear from the start: create tools that support a more active, intuitive way of working. More than four decades later, the company still leads its conversation with the human body rather than the furniture, and describes itself as a designer and manufacturer of ergonomic products that improve the health and comfort of work life.

The defining chapter began in 1998, when Humanscale started working with the American industrial designer Niels Diffrient. A student of Cranbrook Academy of Art and a long-time leader of Henry Dreyfuss's studio, Diffrient co-authored the three-volume human factors reference titled Humanscale. Together they introduced the Freedom chair in 1999. Its weight-compensating recline responds to the sitter's body, replacing the usual knobs and levers, and it set a new benchmark for simplicity through engineering. Diffrient went on to design Liberty, Diffrient World and Diffrient Smart, all built on his belief that a chair should adjust to the user, not the other way around.

That thinking shapes the whole range today: self-adjusting seating, sit-stand desks, monitor arms, task lighting and technology tools, each designed to inspire movement and support the user in every posture. The in-house Humanscale Design Studio, established in New York in 2002, works to a philosophy of function, simplicity, longevity and sustainability, alongside collaborators such as Don Chadwick and Todd Bracher. Fewer parts mean fewer things to break, less material to source and products that stay in service for longer. Humanscale's innovations have received more than 200 awards since 2007 and have been featured in museums including the Museum of Modern Art.

What sets Humanscale apart is how seriously it treats its own footprint. The company is a Certified B Corporation, and in 2022 it became the first furniture manufacturer awarded TRUE Gold and Silver zero waste certifications across all of its factories. It pairs its products with ergonomics consulting and training, and supports corporate, healthcare and institutional clients in more than 28 countries. For a workplace that wants to feel calm, uncluttered and genuinely good for the people in it, Humanscale offers a quietly radical idea: remove what is unnecessary, and let the design do the adjusting.
